A home is more than four walls. It reflects the style and taste of an inhabitant. Four walls of a home can be made beautiful with the help of light, colour, texture, display of artefacts’ etc. Without proper light, whether it is natural or artificial, we cannot enjoy the purity or intensity of colours. Without Colour there is no life. Colours can change our mood which can affect our daily life.
Following things should be kept in mind before choosing the colour of the walls:
1 Choosing the right colour:
Choosing the right colour for the wall is not very easy. Basic knowledge of the colour wheel helps in choosing the right colours for the wall of the bedroom, restroom or kid’s corner. Before choosing the right colour, first, we should finalize the colour scheme for every room or wall or a particular corner. Colour scheme could be monochromatic, bichromatic, multichromatic, warm, cool or contrasting depending on the choice and area to be painted. A bedroom should be painted with cool, subtle or pastel colours to give rest to eyes whereas the colour of sitting area can be finalized keeping in mind display of artefacts’ on walls and colour of light. Here, primary, secondary or contrasting colour scheme can be used. Choosing the right colour will make a room appear larger or smaller.
2 Types of Paints:
Normally water, oil or acrylic based paints are used to paint the walls of a house. There are different types of paints available for exterior or interior walls. The advantage of water-based paints are, it is easy to clean up with water, they get dry quickly, finish is elastic, flexible and they are resistant to cracking. They are available in matte finish.
On the other hand, oil-based paints give an attractive gloss, semi-gloss, satin, flat or matt appearance. They are long lasting.
Acrylic paint is also water based and its appearance and quality is better than normal water-based paints.
Apart from painting walls with colours, wallpapers can also be used to cover walls. Wallpapers are available in various colours and designs as per the choice. The finish of wallpaper surpasses traditional painting of walls.
3 Adding texture to the wall
Adding texture to a wall can create depth in the wall. Use of texture with colour light will create a dramatic effect. The texture is normally used in the restroom.
4 Colour light
Before painting a wall or pasting wallpaper, the effect of coloured light on it and the paintings displayed should be assessed. There are different coloured light available in the market with different shades. Therefore the impact of light, intensity, shades and fixtures should be taken into consideration according to the colour of the wall.
5 The surface of the wall:
The surface of the wall plays a very important role for painting. Purity and intensity of colour can be visible on the well-prepared surface. A surface is prepared according to the selection of paint whether it is water-based, acrylic or oil paint. For texture, or for wallpaper, the surface is prepared according to texture and adhesive of wallpaper. The surface is also prepared to keep in mind the artefacts’ displayed on it.
